Psychosocial

Why psychosocial support?

Poverty often is associated with parental abuse and neglect, and many times results in children being separated from their parents and sent to institutions. We want to keep children with parents who love them. Many parents in the area spend 24 hours per day in shebeens drinking alcohol and fail to give their children the care and support they need. We have to address the poverty-induced situations that lead to parental abuse and neglect. Children and youth caught in the cycle of poverty have never experienced the good things in life such as sporting events and festivals.

1 in 3 people living in Mix Informal Settlement Area of Namibia are earning income from selling firewood or fetching water for others. When there is no one to buy their firewood or hire them to fetch water, they have no income to buy food to feed their family. We are looking for 12 people to sponsor to buy food and hygiene products for them per month.

How are we going to help?

Family support-  conduct home visits to assess the home situation of children so that we can provide services to the family. Provide parental skills and parent education groups to help parents better care for their children and support them in their educational goals;  provide counselling for families who need it; provide food parcels each month to families in need; sponsor at least one trip a year for children to visit an entertainment event, for example, going to the Windhoek fairground or Windhoek cultural festival.

  • With your gift, social workers and community workers will support family
  • Including but not limited: home visit, counseling, educate parents, assess and provide food parcels month
  • $50 will allow two families to get monthly food and hygiene products
  • $20 will allow a child to visit local cultural events for the year
