Education

Why an education program?

Parents are illiterate and lack the ability to assist their children with schoolwork or motivate them to study. Students struggle with learning, do not know how to read and write English or in their first local language. Parents are unemployed and unable to pay fees for their children to attend vocational or university, and students have no one to guide them through the application process. The settlement area has no school, resources or quiet places children can go to study, complete their homework, learn or explore subjects that might lead them to careers, like STEM. Children are going to school with worn or torn uniforms, no shoes on their feet, and carrying their books in plastic shopping bags. Many children miss school and end up back in kindergarten. Many children often go to school hungry and return to no food in their houses. These children are left to roam on the streets or go to shebeens begging for food or money to buy bread.

How are we going to help them?

After school program– teach children how to read and write. Homework support– help children focus on their homework, support slow learners and STEM subjects. Basic needs– provide learners with basic needs, including books, school uniforms and shoes, school bags, hygiene products, including pads for teen girls, a soup kitchen. Transportation– the distance to school is about 20km, help with transport to and from school. Tertiary education support– pay the fees for learners to improve their grades, attend university or find a job and also pay for tutoring. Scholarships– provide annual awards, renewable and in-kind scholarships for learners.

Education is for all. Many parents are struggling to send their children to kindergarten/pre primary school. Some months parents are not able to pay the fees; children have to stay out of school. We estimated $ 11,000 would help 25 children to stay in school in the Mix Informal Settlement Area of Namibia for the Academic year Jan 2021- Dec 2021.

Many of our families are uneducated and unemployed and can't afford to pay tutors to help children with reading and writing, or enroll their children in school programs. So, many children at Mix Informal Settlement Area complete primary school without knowing how to read and write. So, we’re offering tuition relief, and literacy education. $80 will pay one tutor per month to help children read and write. How many children could you support?
